Tree trimming and pruning in central New Jersey

Trimming cuts back branches to keep a healthy tree healthy and keep limbs off roofs, gutters, driveways and service lines. Pruning is the more careful version, where the company chooses which branches to take so the tree stays sound and keeps its shape.

Safety first. Do not trim anything touching or close to a power line yourself. Call the utility.

When you need this

  • Branches are touching or scraping the roof, siding or chimney.
  • Dead or broken limbs hang over a yard, walkway, car or play area.
  • A tree has grown into a driveway, a view or a neighbor's yard.
  • A mature tree has a dense crown and needs thinning so wind can pass through.

What happens

  1. You and the company agree what you want: which branches, how much, and what the tree should look like after. A walk around the tree helps.
  2. The crew climbs the tree, or uses a bucket truck or a pole saw from the ground, and makes the cuts from the outside of the crown in.
  3. Larger limbs are lowered on ropes so they do not hit the roof, fence or plants below.
  4. Cut limbs are fed through a chipper and hauled, or stacked at the curb if that is what you agreed. Ask which before the day.

What affects the quote

  • How many trees, how tall they are and how much has to come off.
  • Whether the work is climbing, a bucket truck or a pole saw from the ground.
  • How close the branches are to the roof and wires, which slows the work.
  • Brush hauling versus leaving cut limbs at the curb.
  • Species and timing. Some trees bleed sap, and some are best pruned while dormant.

We set no prices. For published national cost ranges and where they come from, see the pricing guide. A real price needs someone to look at the job.

Questions to ask the company

  • Which branches will you take, and how much of the crown will be left?
  • Do you top trees? Topping (cutting a crown back to stubs) harms most trees, so a good answer is no.
  • Are cleanup and hauling in the price?
  • Can I see a certificate of insurance for the crew?

We are a referral site, not the tree company, so we cannot answer these for the company that calls you. Ask them.

Permits

Town tree rules are written town by town, and we have not confirmed how each one treats pruning compared with removal. If the tree stands in the strip between the sidewalk and the street, ask the town who owns it before anyone cuts. Each town page has a permit note.
